Dawn Renee Cortez, 42 of North Baltimore died on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at her residence.

She was born in Lima, Ohio on October 27, 1972 to Donald J. Altman, Sr. and Cynthia (Dickman) Altman. Dawn married Rich Cortez and they later divorced.

She is survived by her father, Donald J. (Connie) Altman, Sr. of Souix Falls, SD., mother Cindy (Ray Hobbs) Altman of Findlay, her daughter Amanda (Victoria Gonzalez) Cortez of Findlay. She is also survived by her fiancé Matt Brooker and his children, Kiley and Johnie Brooker of North Baltimore, a brother Don (Jamayne) Altman, Jr of Souix Falls, SD., sisters Donette (Jeremy) Hastings of Findlay, Deanna (Wayne) Gaw of San Francisco, CA., four nieces, five nephews, five great-nieces and several aunts and uncles. Dawn loved animals and enjoyed cooking for her family. She especially enjoyed taking walks with her sister and was an avid Ohio State fan.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Terry McBeath officiating. Burial will follow in New Maplewood Cemetery.

North Baltimore Boys Basketball picked up a coveted BVC road win last night, hanging on to beat Hopewell – Loudon in Bascom.

The Tigers built a halftime lead of 25 – 20, and then hung on in the third quarter, battling the Chieftans (4-7, 3-4 BVC)  for control of the game, still holding the 5 point lead. But in the 4th H – L fought back themselves back into the game, but fell a basket short, 46 – 44.

North Baltimore at 6-6, 3-3 BVC was let by NB’s 6′ 7″ junior, Chad Wright, who blocked 10 shots and hit for 17 points and 6 rebounds.

Sean Watson had 4 points, 4 steals and 7 assists; Levi Newcomer hit for 8 points; Lane Bishop had 7 points; Derek McMahon hit for 5 points inside, Noah Brian hit a 3, Jacob Pelton scored 2 points.

Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Informational Meeting

The Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN) program is a unique opportunity.  The program involves hands-on natural resource education program coupled with community-based volunteer service.

Courses are held at various Wood County Park District properties as well as some off-site locations. Class topics include: interpretation skills, ecological concepts, geology, herpetology, forests, ornithology, entomology, plants, mammals, aquatic life, and stewardship. During field instruction, students will be asked to walk outside on uneven terrain and/or wet areas. Boots and/or sturdy shoes as well as weather-appropriate clothing are recommended for this course.

There is an enrollment fee of $200.00 for Wood County residents and $250.00 for out-of-county applicants to cover the cost of training materials, speakers, facilities and a mandatory volunteer criminal records check. Class size is limited to 15 students.

The OCVN program  is co-sponsored by the Wood County Park District and the Ohio State University Extension of Wood County. The OCVN program is scheduled to begin in April and the deadline to submit an application is February 15.  If you are interested in the program or would like to learn more, plan to attend this informational meeting.   Leaders:  Lori Parratt and Craig Everett
