North Baltimore resident Chris Snyder has been hired to fill the recently open laborer position in the Village Public Works Department. The opening is due to Brandon Conine taking a job with ODOT. Village Administrator Donna Dettling provided Village Council with the following recommendation for the hire:

Donna Dettling, Village Administrator
Date:    May 12, 2015
Re:      Recommendation for Laborer Position

We received 8 applications for the full-time Laborer Position; which were evaluated and narrowed down to 4 candidates for an interview. The evaluation criteria for narrowing the applications included looking for skill sets that matched the position description as well as good work history.  Background checks were completed and none of the candidates selected for an interview were excluded due to the background check.  One of the candidates chosen for an interview declined the interview because the starting wage was too low.  Doug reviewed candidates again from the Laborer applications as well as the applications from the recent Plant Operator selection process and picked another candidate for interview and this individual also declined because the starting wage was too low.  By this time we had completed 3 interviews and felt we had a candidate we both agreed would be a good fit.

Doug Wickard and I interviewed three candidates the week of May 4th and all met the minimum qualifications and were viable candidates.  All candidates brought valuable skills to the table, however one candidate possessed experience in landscaping, safety training, and possess a Class B CDL license, which made him our first choice.  References were contacted and this information also supported our decision to recommend Chris Snyder for the Laborer position.

Chris Snyder was offered the position of Laborer and accepted contingent upon Council approval of the hiring recommendation. Since Chris already has his CDL license, he would start at an hourly rate $12.18, which is the starting rate of a Laborer $11.68 plus $.50 for a CDL B Classification.   Chris can start on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

A copy of Mr. Snyder’s application as well as the other candidates is available for review in the Administrator office.

A motion accepting staff recommendation to hire Chris Snyder at the starting hourly rate of $12.18 and hire date of May 26, 2015 is requested.

This request was approved by council by a 4 – 2 vote, with Leslee Thompson and Bill Cameron voting no (Rich Rose, after a long delay, finally voted yes).
