At the most recent meeting (June 26, 2018), of the North Baltimore Local School District Board of Education, the board took the following actions:

The board approved the naming of Co-Athletic Directors for 2018 – 19. They are Dan Davis, who has been in the district 2 years as an intervention specialist and assistant football and basketball coach. He is joined by long-time NBHS Athletic Equipment Manger and Middle School Intervention Specialist, Kevin Switzer. They replace Sarah Bugner, who stepped down after one year as A. D., citing time away from her young family. She remains at NBHS as a Middle School Language Arts teacher. Paula Beaupry will continue as Assistant Athletic Director.

The board also beefed up the Random Drug Testing Program at NBHS, approving an additional policy regarding a student “refusing” to take a required random drug test. This past year the district had their first “refusal” and did not have a policy in place to deal with the issue. The policy now states that refusal results in being removed from the activity for the remainder of the season. The cost for the test, a 5-panel screen including nicotine is $16 each.

The board once again accepted an approximate $10,000 anonymous donation for Powell Elementary School consumable supplies. The supplies are being provided for the Pre-K through 6th grade students at the Powell building. This donation has been made for the past several years.

The board learned that 40 new LED lights have replaced the 86 original light that were installed in The Jungle (gym). The lights were paid for with grant funding and have a two year pay back with the electrical usage savings.

District Treasurer Steven Stewart reported the district currently has a fund balance of $6.7 million, which is as was expected and means that the district is in “pretty good shape” financially. He noted that there were many improvement projects around the district this past year. And remarked that he is looking forward to 2019, with “lots going on.”

The board approved the district health and dental MMO insurance rates through the Wood County School Consortium and Hylant Services. It was reported the rates increase by 6%, which is a great deal and minimal compared to other programs, according to Ryan Delaney, Supt. He added that the consortium provides reinforcement and stabilization to the districts rates.

The board approved school lunch prices for 2018 -19:
Milk (remains the same) – .50
K – 12 grade Lunch $2.95
Adult Lunch – $3.45
Ala Cart Main Item – $2.45
The rates increased 10 cents over the past school year.

The next meeting of the North Baltimore Board of Education is Tuesday, July 24, 6:00.
