Automatic vs. Standard Transmission: What’s the Difference

When purchasing a new car, it’s important to consider whether you want an automatic or standard transmission. A vehicle’s transmission carries out the crucial role of supplying the right amount of power to the car’s wheels. In other words, it determines at what speed the vehicle drives by shifting gears. When it comes to choosing between automatic or standard transmission, there isn’t a right or wrong answer. Ultimately, your choice will depend on your personal preference. To better understand the difference between automatic vs. standard transmissions so you can make the best decision for yourself, continue reading.

The main difference between an automatic and standard transmission

The key difference between automatic and standard transmission is that an automatic transmission system automatically shifts between gears, while standard transmission systems require the driver to manually change the gears.

When a driver wants to achieve a higher speed in a vehicle with a standard transmission, the driver must use a clutch pedal and shift knob to change gears accordingly. For an automatic system, the vehicle does all the work, and all the driver has to do is to press on the pedal.

While a vehicle with an automatic system may seem like the obvious choice due to its greater ease of use, there are pros and cons to each system. Such benefits and drawbacks are listed below.

Automatic transmission benefits

  • Easier to use, especially in heavy traffic where constantly changing speeds is necessary
  • Doesn’t require additional knowledge to operate
  • Offers a smoother ride
  • Allows quicker transmission shifts
  • Provides generally better gas mileage
  • Safer because the driver doesn’t have to focus on changing gears

Cons of automatic transmission

  • Typically more expensive
  • Affords a less immersive driving experience
  • More complex, which results in higher repair costs

Standard transmission benefits

  • Allows more control over shifting and power
  • Offers enhanced driving experience
  • Typically less expensive
  • Simpler, with fewer moving parts, which means less expensive repairs and replacement parts

Cons of manual transmission

  • Requires a specific skill set and training to operate
  • Involves slower and less fluid gear shifts
  • Requires more work to operate and shift speeds while driving
  • Offers a more limited selection of models, as most vehicles sold in the U.S. are automatic
