The North Baltimore Board of Education met Tuesday evening, August 23, at NBHS for their regular monthly meeting. President Tami Thomas, Vice-President Jaimye Bushey, Member Tim Archer, and Member Jeremy Sharninghouse were present. Board member Mrs. Cheryl Cotterman was absent.
It was business as usual for the majority of the meeting with approval of expenditures and granting of contracts and agreements. Some highlights of the meeting were:
(From Superintendent Ryan Delaney)
*“We are off to a really smooth start” he said.
*Delaney expects more new kids to arrive in the district after the Labor Day weekend. “There are families that don’t think school should start until after Labor Day, so they don’t enroll their children until then.”
* 2/3 of all Ohio Schools started last week
*Delaney said the NBPD is fine with the School Resource Officer (Mandy Slane) being housed full –time at the school each school day, even though their agreement with the school is a 50/50% deal. “Even though she is mainly here, every day, there is an understanding that she can leave if the village needs her for an emergency situation, “ he said.
*The maintenance of the softball and baseball fields at the Village Park will revert to the Village since those sports are now moved to the High School complex.
(From Dr. Bob Falkenstein)
*Dr. Falkenstein has held class meetings with all students to review the new handbook guidelines.
*Announced “Meet the Teams” pep assembly would be held this Friday, August 26 at 2:10. The first football game of the season is at Holgate at 7:00pm this Friday night.
*”I am really impressed with the feel around here this first week back! “said Falkenstein. He concluded, “If I can be of service in any way to families and community members, please let me know.”
(From Powell Principal Mr. Lange)
*”We’re off to a great start! “stated Mr. Lange. “Pam (VanMooy) provided a lot of great help. I want to publicly thank Pam for her assistance as I take over as principal and for her continued commitment to the students in our building.”
*A heartfelt thank you from the entire staff is extended to the local anonymous donor for their generosity and for their willingness to see that all students get off to a great start, with all of the needed school supplies.”
* Discussed Wonders reading curriculum, and GoMath math curriculum, and the efforts being made to ensure there is a continuum of support for all learners.
*In an attempt to save money, parents have been asked to reference an on-line version of the Powell Student Handbook. Please contact the office if you don’t have internet access, so you can be provided with a printed version.
* Mr. Lange humorously concluded with, “If anyone is looking for community service opportunities, please let me know. I will give you a pair of kiddie scissors and you can help me open taco sauce and ketchup packets, stick straws in juice boxes, open Lunchables, and tie shoes anytime you want to! “
All of the administrators acknowledged the hard work of the custodial staffs at the district buildings over the summer, using words like ‘immaculate” and “impeccable” to describe their outstanding efforts. (Congratulations on a job well done!)
