Donald D. Santmire, 84, of North Baltimore passed away at 7:10 PM Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Briar Hill Health Campus.
He was born October 5, 1930 to the late Merle and Agnes (Starr) Santmire. He married Gladys Miller on January 9, 1954 and she preceded him in death in September of 1998.
He is survived by a son, Ronald Santmire of North Baltimore; a daughter, Kathy (Albert, Jr.) Bear of Hammansburg; grandchildren: Julie Bear and Dena Bear, both of North Baltimore and Donald Bear of Belmore; 11 great-grandchildren: Walter, Maranda and Harmon Young; Jacob and Joseph Bear; Jessica, Jonathon, Steven, Loretta, Presley Bear; two great-great-grandchildren, Elaina Bear and Preston Bear; step-granddaughter, Mallory; brother, James Santmire of Bairdstown; two sisters, Martha White and Maxine (John) Copus, both of Findlay. He was also preceded death by a brother-in-law, Robert White.
He served his country from 1951-53 in the US Marine Corps. Donald was a truck driver for Sausser Steel Co. and a welder for Daybrook Hydraulic Corp.
He was a member of the North Baltimore American Legion Post 539 and the NW Ohio Antique Machinery Assoc. He loved animals, and was especially fond of his dog, Torro.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 19, 2015 at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Susan Kronbach officiating. Burial will follow in Weaver Cemetery where the American Legion Post #539 will present full military rites. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 PM & 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and for one hour prior to the service (1:00-2:00 PM) at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wood County Humane Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
