Johnny Appleseed’s View: A Look at the Maumee Valley’s history and future, as seen through the eyes of John Chapman
Fort Wayne, March 10, 2015: Historical character Johnny Appleseed will pay a visit to the Defiance Regional Medical Center on March 21, at 1:00pm. Johnny Appleseed—portrayed by Bill Grimes—will share his story and talk about the history of the Maumee Valley, and lead a conversation about its future. Following Johnny’s visit, the Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor will present a program about other tourism, education and marketing opportunities in the region, focusing on the Maumee Valley Scenic Byway. That presentation will begin at 2:00 pm.
Both activities are free, and reservations are not required. The Defiance Regional Medical Center is located at 1200 Ralston Ave, Defiance, Ohio.
Bill Grimes received his BS in education from The Ohio State University in 1972 and received his Masters in general education form Defiance College in 1991. He taught 30 years for the Northeastern Local Schools (Tinora) and retired in 2002.
Bill Grimes has performed as Johnny Appleseed for about 15 years for the area schools and other non-profit agencies in northwestern Ohio. He has been Johnny for groups numbering 6 – 150. In the fall of 2004 he taught for Defiance College and began working for the Defiance Soil and Water Conservation District as their Education Specialist in January of 2005.
