On Sunday March 19th 2017 Klassy Kids 4H club held a meeting. After the club discussed old business, new business and received a treasurer’s update they had a guest speaker.
The guest speaker was Louis Belluomini and his service dog Star. Louis was deployed overseas with the United States Army and suffered a TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury during his deployment. He also struggles with P.T.S.D or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His service dog, Star helps him with some of the effects of PTSD and the day to day things that most people wouldn’t even think of, she helps him to not be afraid and she alerts him if he is having a nightmare.
Louis talked about the steps he had to take to get Star and the very extensive training Star had to undergo as well. One of the last trainings before coming home was for Louis and Star to visit a zoo and Star had to sit in front of every zoo animal without reacting to them. Louis also educated the club members and their family about how to interact with service animals and gave us some interesting facts regarding service dogs and their companions.
The most important thing to remember is to never pet a service animal, that could put you, the animal or the animals companion in great danger.
