Letter to the Editor of the NBXpress 11-12-19
Dear Editor,
Earlier this past summer, many observant North Baltimore residents were noticing the sudden appearance of craft-art sunflowers. They are in clusters of three and are planted in conspicuous places at various locations around town. They are readily visible and easily catch one’s attention. I guess it was about 5 months ago, the NBXpress published a story about them shortly after they began to mysteriously show up. These delightful little works of art are made with 6 inch pie pans, cut and hand painted to look like sunflowers and attached to bamboo stakes which are planted in the ground. The story noted that the artist was unknown. A cluster is planted next to the front entrance of my office building at 311 N. Main Street. We love them. The flowers have stimulated many comments and many questions from many people who visit us here. Unfortunately, when asked, we are unable to name the stealth artist since, to this day, their name remains unknown to me. Every single person I have ever asked is likewise unable to produce a name. This includes the NBXpress Editor, who knows a lot about everything in town.
Curiously, a delicate little craft-art butterfly perched atop a thin wire was also planted out front in the relative same time frame. I wonder if there is a connection with the sunflowers?
It is my estimated guess that this phantom artist has chosen to spread their sunshine, goodwill, and pride in this community anonymously out of a sense of humility. The artist may be stage -shy and wants to avoid the public attention which surely will come with the much-deserved accolades.
I further maintain that this community injustice must not prevail. In keeping with the current spirit on display in Washington, D.C., I am calling for a WHISTLE BLOWER! Surely there is someone out there who has insider knowledge of the identity of the Secret Sunflower Santa. Come forward! Enough is enough! Let the inquiry begin!
Dr. Kevin King
