Johnnessa Edwards, 11, is in the 5th grade at North Baltimore’s Powell Elementary. She will soon be competing in the “Super Bowl” of Cheer in Florida!
Johnnessa has cheered at Midwest Cheer Elite, a competition gym in Perrysburg, since she was 4. Many of these teams have won National Championships, but none have ever made it to The Summit (the “Super Bowl” of cheer). She also cheered for the NB Tigers last football season.
To make it to The Summit a team must receive a bid, which is like an invitation to go. The Summit is Varsity All Star’s Cheerleading Championship at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando Fl. Just 10% of the best teams from around the United States, and the world, including Canada, Germany and Japan are invited to compete for the title.
Johnnessa is one of around twenty girls who are on the Junior 3 team, also known as the Diva Katz. Johnnessa is a flyer on the team, so her mother always tell her before every competition, “fly high baby girl and keep it in the air!!!!”
Johnnessa will be flying to Orlando Thursday, April 28, with competition beginning on Friday April 29th. The teams that place on Friday, will compete in the Finals on Sunday, May 1st.
Johnnessa will be traveling with her coaches and staying with other team members and parents, so her mother wants to send her with lots of good wishes from everyone at home.
She is the daughter of Melissa Hilt and John Edwards.
