BLUFFTON, Ohio–Hanna Brian of North Baltimore, Ohio, is participating in a Bluffton University cross-cultural experience in Guatemala during this fall semester.
Brian, along with other Bluffton students, will live with Guatemalan families in Guatemala City and take Spanish classes at CASAS (Central America Study and Service), a program affiliated with the Guatemalan Mennonite Church. In addition, students will have classes about Guatemalan history and culture and about peace-making efforts. During the second half of the semester-long experience, participants are placed in a volunteer field experience in a second Guatemalan community at an organization working to better the lives of residents. Students will also have the opportunity to spend a week exploring a location of their choice in Guatemala.
Brian, daughter of Rob and Shelley Brian, is a senior majoring in social work and criminal justice. She was a 2014 graduate of North Baltimore High School.
This experience will fulfill Bluffton’s undergraduate cross-cultural requirement that must be completed before graduation. Students can either complete a cross-cultural experience or take six credit hours in one foreign language.
A “Sending Service” was held at 6:30 p.m. at the Peace Thrones , on campus on Sunday, Aug. 27.
