Melville James Patterson, Sr., 75, of rural Findlay passed away at Houghton Lake, MI on Thursday, July 20, 2017. He was born on Jan. 16, 1942 to the late Dwight E. and Helen I. (Eckert) Patterson.
On June 10, 1959, he married Betty Jane Ives and she survives along with their four children: Harold Patterson; Laurie (Sam) Girdler; Mel, Jr. (Doreen) Patterson and Mark Patterson; grandchildren: Nick (Lauren) Girdler; Kelly (Bryce) Hanlon; Andy (Julie) Girdler; Daniel Patterson; Anna Girdler and Cody Switzer; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Girdler; Graeme Hanlon; David Girdler and Nora Joy Hanlon.
Also surviving him are brothers, Dwight (Ruth) Patterson, Timm (Deborah) Patterson and Mike (Cyndi) Patterson; sister, Kathy (Dennis) McGrain; sisters-in-law, Frances (Ed) Lockmiller; Mary Lou Zeigler and Harriet (Wid) Deahl. He was also preceded in death by Baby Patterson; brother, Jack L. Patterson; sister-in-law, Martha Patterson and a brother-in-law, Jim Zeigler.
Mel was a farmer throughout his life, he also worked for the Ohio Agriculture Research and Development Center and Dow Chemical. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in North Baltimore where he and Betty directed the youth fellowship and family ministries, he also served as a trustee. He was the former zoning inspector for Portage Twp. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, camping and pheasant hunting.
Mel always looked forward to the Patterson family camping trip and to the family “Sunday dinners” he and Betty hosted at their home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Pastor Susan Kronbach officiating. Burial will follow in New Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore. Visitation will be held from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. Monday at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore.
