Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund “Pennies to Dollars for Scholars” Exceeds Expectations

Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund (NOSF) held its first ever Pennies to Dollars for Scholars penny war the week of April 25-29 at many of its scholarship partner schools.  Students collected $13, 604 in pennies from fellow students.  The grades at each school competed with one another by seeing who could bring in the most pennies.  Nineteen schools participated in this fundraiser including Christ the King School, Emmanuel Christian, Monclova Christian, Queen of Apostles, Regina Coeli School, Rosary Cathedral, St. Aloysius Catholic, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Joan of Arc, St. John the Baptist Catholic, St. Joseph Maumee, St. Joseph Sylvania, St. Louis Catholic, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, St. Rose Perrysburg, St. Ursula Academy, Toledo Christian Schools, and Trinity Lutheran.

Schools got into the spirit with different incentives to motivate the children to bring in pennies including having different themes for each day like sports day or hat day.  Some of the teachers turned the fundraiser into a math lesson for their students.  St. Rose in Perrysburg collected the most pennies during the week with a total of $2,532. Central City Ministry of Toledo school Queen of Apostles raised $579 in pennies from their students, which is impressive considering ninety-three percent of the students at Queen of Apostles qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Taylor Automotive was the major sponsor of Pennies to Dollars for Scholars as well as a participant collecting an additional $240 at its dealerships.  Steve Taylor, owner of Taylor Automotive said of this effort. “We were so excited to participate in the Pennies to Dollars for Scholars endeavor. We are honored to partner with an organization that helps make private education possible for hard-working members of our community.”

The Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund is the only privately funded need-based scholarship program in northwest Ohio that awards scholarships to children who otherwise might not be able to afford private schools for kindergarten through eighth grade and who do not qualify for an Educational Choice Voucher.  Eligible families are required to demonstrate their financial need as measured by standards similar to the Federal School Lunch program.
