This year’s award is going to a student who has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds. In 2017, this athlete lost his mother, North Baltimore alumni Ronda Staley, and was forced to make some tough choices. He ultimately decided to return to North Baltimore to be closer to family.
At 4 years old, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Having diabetes in sports forced him to pay more attention to his health and to be responsible. He had to be well educated on how to maintain a good blood sugar and carry out difficult tasks in the sport.
Maturity and responsibility were major factors in this process and he had to learn them at a young age. His maturity, focus and heart as an athlete has made him an obvious leader and role model here at North Baltimore High School.
This year’s courageous student award belongs to Nate Staley.
