Students at Powell Elementary are in their third year of TAB, or Teaching for Artistic Behaviors, studio classroom. This method of learning focuses on the students as the product. Students are creating and discovering using the Studio Habits of Mind as a guide. These habits are: Develop Craft, Engage & Persist, Envision, Express, Observe, Reflect, Stretch & Explore and Understand the (art) World. This approach follows the state and national art standard and provides students an authentic experience creating THEIR own art. At the beginning of the year, students brainstorm to establish the various categories to be judged in the art show. As students create Wonderful Original Works of Art or WOW pieces, they mount and prepare them for the art show. Included in this year’s judging was the category of Direct Instruction. These are artworks where younger students follow a step-by-step approach to creation, often to develop a particular skill. Students move through the artistic process in an authentic manner, by making choices, problem solving and persisting from ideation to exhibition.
