Powell Elementary Principal’s Report to the Board of Education

In March we began registering kindergarten students for 2016-2017. On April 14, 2016 the kindergarten teachers held a parent’s meeting in the evening. They gave parents packets of expectations that they can be working on prior to the assessments they will do in the fall. Parents also signed up for those assessment times, which will take place prior to school starting in August. At this point we have 42 students registered.

A Family Make It Take It Night took place on March 21 from 6:30-8 pm. Parents and their children worked on art and music activities. Ms. Meyerson taught a bucket drumming session and Ms. Miklovic taught a blind drawing class. Everyone had a great time!

The mobile Dentist visited Powell School recently. A number of students were seen, which was a real help to parents. Mrs. Emahiser coordinated this event.

April begins the official testing month at Powell! We have already finished the 3rd grade tests! Most of the tests are taken on the Chrome books and have gone pretty well. The students do report that these tests are hard.

This month we are pleased to announce a visit from Jeanette and Christopher Canyon. These talented illustrators from Columbus will be giving several talks to students on April 28th. They will then do a presentation for parents and students at 6:45pm in the evening. Everyone is invited to come to hear how these talented artists research and create their art for their books. We will be having an art show on display during the same time!

Teachers are busy preparing for the end of this school year and looking forward to next year. We have streamlined the grade card for next year, looked over the special area teacher’s schedule, and started to look at class assignments for next year.

We are pleased to announce that the anonymous donor who has generously provided all of the school supplies for our Preschool through 6th grade students for the last few years has once again notified us that they want to continue the tradition for next year. This can be a huge financial burden to parents in the fall. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Muffins for Moms will be held on May 13, 2016 at 7:15 am. Children and their mom, stepmom, or grandma are encouraged to send in their reservation for this traditional event at Powell!

Field Trips have been planned for our grade levels that tie to an educational standard or unit of study. This experience outside the classroom is very important as it opens up the world outside North Baltimore for our children. We do take chaperones but are limiting them to parents, step-parents or grandparents. All must be listed our emergency medical forms.

We also have many important activities planned as we rush toward the end of the year! Only 23 days left but who is counting!

Great things are happening at Powell !!
