I’ve been honored and blessed to give the Benediction for the annual Community Christmas Program since 1997. From the beginning, I decided not to write the Benediction in advance. Instead I brought some index cards and a pencil. I would listen to the music and let the Benediction flow from the presentation. That’s been my process ever since.
This year’s wonderful, beautiful, and moving program was titled “Star of Wonder.”
This is the Benediction I wrote:
Go now with God’s Hope, Promise, and Light within you, and rejoice in Emmanuel.
May God lead you all your days, especially through your darkest nights.
People of God, rise up and follow. Follow every star and sign that leads you to the Savior.
Leave the darkness of your sin. Rise up and follow, and let the light of God’s Day break into your soul.
May God shine divine light into every moment of remembrance. May God’s Light keep that love alive.
In every “December Season,” in every moment you feel alone or lost, may you know God’s Love.
As you go “up yonder,” behold the Light of God, behold the Savior, behold the Joy of God.
On the way, as this December, you “work to get everything done,” know that God, in Christ, has already done everything for your salvation.
May God bring you now, and for all eternity, into the “Perfect Light.”
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
