The North Baltimore High School Boys Basketball team won the Riverdale Sectional Championship game over New Riegel Friday night, 74 – 62.
The #3 seeded Blue Jackets came out convinced that this was going to be their night, taking a first quarter lead of 19 – 15 over the boys from NB (#5). But Chase Naugle had other ideas, as he kept the Tigers in the game offensively, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the first half, helping to bring NB back to within one at the half, 30 – 29.
The Tigers upped the defensive pressure in the 3rd quarter and put up 26 points of their own, including a half-court buzzer beater for 3 points by Naugle. Levi Gazarek led the 3rd quarter charge with 9 of his 19 points in the period, as NB led 55 – 39.
New Riegel never gave up, but they never threatened the Tigers in the 4th quarter, as NB hit just enough foul shots to hold the lead. NB hit just 24 of 39 foul shots for the game.
Julian Hagemyer scored 13 points and Brady Rader 12, with Noah Brian adding 7, Filip Franjic 2 and Adam Flores one point.
Gazarek and Rader were leading rebounders with 4 each. Hagemyer had 3 steals and Naugle 4 assists.
NB ups it record to 14 – 10 on the season. They will play Wednesday, March 8, 6:15 pm, in the District Semi-final against Mohawk, who upset Hopewell-Loudon in the second game of the evening at Riverdale.
