The North Baltimore Boys Basketball team opened the 2016 – 17 season with a solid win over Fostoria St. Wendelin Friday night, in non-league action.
The Mohawks opened with a 5 – 0 lead about a minute and a half into the game, as the Tigers were getting open looks, but the ball would not fall through the hoop. That all changed when Julian Hagemyer, a junior, opened the flood gates, hitting the first points of the season with a jumper, leading to 22 straight NB points by mid-way through the second quarter. The very active 6′ 4″ Hagemyer, scored 9 of his game high 23 points in the first 8 minutes, hitting a double – double for the game, as he added 11 rebounds.
NB employed a scrappy full court press and fast breaking style, with seniors Noah Brian and Taylor Bishop, along with Chase Naugle (junior), Brady Rader (sophomore) and Adam Flores (junior) attacking the ball at every opportunity. Gone to graduation is NB’s big man from the past couple of years, 6′ 7″ Chad Wright. Stepping up to fill the void inside were Hagemyer, along with 6′ 3″ freshman Levi Gazarek and 6′ 2″ junior Noah Cotterman. This is another fun group of fine young men to watch on the hardwood, put together by Coach John Kloepfer and his staff of Jeff Wright, Andy Rader and Joey Hagemyer.
Tonight the Tigers travel to Jerry City for the annual battle with the Elmwood Royals. Come out and support NB, with the JV tipping off at 6:00.
The Junior Varsity also picked up a win, beating the Mohawk 29 – 19.
