Pastor Max Lucado, well-known author of many books, tells of a time when his daughter Jenna was a toddler. He took her to play in a park. As she was playing in a sandbox, an ice cream truck came along, so Max bought her an ice cream treat. When Jenna turned around to receive the treat her dad found that her mouth was full of sand, full of dirt.
This father asks, “Did I love her with dirt in her mouth? Absolutely. Was she any less my daughter with dirt in her mouth? Of course not. Was I going to allow her to keep the dirt in her mouth? No way!”
He loved her just the way she was. I absolutely love the way Lucado puts it: “I refused to leave her there.” How wonderful is that!?!?! He refused to leave his daughter with the dirt. Instead he carried her to a water fountain and washed out her mouth! In Lucado’s words, “Why? Because I love her.” What a beautiful image: he washed his child clean!
This is a parable for our lives. Jesus comes to us and says, in effect, “Spit out the dirt — I’ve got something better for you!” That “something better” is life-giving water, cleansing grace, holy nourishment, healing blessings, generous forgiveness, peace, joy, love. The list of divine gifts is infinite!
So where’s the sand, the dirt, in your life? Where in your life do you need healing, forgiveness, strength? The Bible says, “turn to God and be saved.” Jesus came to be our Savior. Come to him for cleansing!
Are you unsure how this might happen? Are you fearful that the dirt is too ingrained? Do you even think God won’t forgive a particular sin? Awaken the best in yourself. Turn to God and be saved.
May I also suggest that, if you’re troubled, unsure, doubtful about forgiveness, or struggling in any way, talk to any pastor in this community. It helps to talk about it. It helps to pray. It helps to hear Good News of Christ. The bible says, “Faith comes by hearing.”
So, come and listen. Come to Christ, and be cleansed with God’s amazing grace. Jesus died for this! He wants to be your Savior! Turn to him and be saved!
