Wonderful Woolly Bears!

Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve
 
Do these cute fuzzy “bears” have the ability to forecast our winter? We will search out the answer as we look for them on the trail and in the quarry. All winter prognostications are the responsibility of the larvae of the Isabella tiger moth and are not necessarily the viewpoint of the Wood County Parks. 
 
 
 

EcoLit Book Group Meeting

Crochet for Kids

Crochet is not just for Grandmas! It not just for girls either! At this event, boys and girls will be taught the basics of crochet and learn how to make their very own scarf. Through this program, kids can improve their hand-eye coordination, gain a sense of accomplishment in making their own clothing, connect with their past and develop a new hobby. Ages 8 and up – elementary/middle school recommended. Crochet hook and yarn are included. Snacks will also be provided.
 
 

 

Sharing Nature with Children: Nature and Loose Parts Play

In an extension of September’s program, we’ll visit The 577 Foundation’s Nature Play Area. Learn about loose parts play and its connection with brain development in children from a BGSU early childhood educator while WCPD staff supervise children at the play area.

Rope Rappelling

 
Saturday, October 12;

Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve
 
It’s a day of rope rappelling fun! A brief orientation will cover gear and safety procedures, then it’s over to the 30-foot cliff. Safety equipment, instruction/guiding, and water are provided; bring a water bottle and snacks. Participants must be 12 years of age or older. Closed-toe footwear only; access to the cliff tops requires short hikes on slightly uneven terrain. Physical or psychological limitations? Call ahead for adaptations.

19th Annual Scarecrow Contest & Workshop

 
Tuesday, October 15; 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Wood County Historical Center
 
Join in on the fun of the fall tradition of building scarecrows. We provide the straw, string, support pole, and refreshments; you bring scarecrow clothes, decoration, and support for the scarecrow’s back and arms (to attach to the display pole, if needed). You can take it home or enter it in our 19th Annual Scarecrow Contest to win cash prizes! Contest Rules and Registration forms are available at wcparks.org/whats-new/ or at the workshop. Contest scarecrows will be left on display for our October 19th Folklore and Funfest at the Historical Center. Limited scarecrow clothes available first come first served. Please review Contest Rules thoroughly to avoid point deductions.

Jack – O’ – Lantern Open Archery

Arrowwood Archery Range
 
Come anytime between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to give this eerie archery program a shot! Carve your own pumpkin-target or use arrows to make a “holey” jack-o’-lantern for a scary-good time! All pumpkins, carving tools, and archery gear provided. Participants must be 7 years, or older; minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Personal gear welcome – must be checked by staff before use.
 
To access the Range, turn onto Huffman Road off of Route 6 and then turn right onto Linwood Road and pass the no outlet sign.

Beeswax Wrap Pouches

Learn to cook at Carter Farm! Kids will learn cooking basics as they prepare a side dish, main course, and dessert that they will eat at the end of the day. From kitchen terms to utensils and measurements, this program will help kids with simple life skills. After all, we all have to eat! Ages 10 and up – upper elementary/middle school recommended.
 
 
 

Open Geocache – n’ – Candy!

Dress in your spookiest costume and embark on this high-tech hunt for tricks and treats at the property of William Windus Knight! Stop by anytime between 4:00pm and 7:00pm to borrow one of our GPS units or bring your smartphone with QR Code reader and Google Maps app to search for hidden geocaches in the park. Dress for the weather and for walking in rough terrain during brief self-guided exploration. Costumes are encouraged! Suggested age for GPS use is 8 and up. Parents/Guardians encouraged to use GPS while guiding children who search for geocaches if children are unable to use GPS. Flashlights encouraged.

Who, Who, Who’s There Owl Walk

We will be on the hunt for owls, especially Ohio’s largest resident owl. We will start indoors for a short talk and then hit the trail for some owl calling. Dress for the weather, cancelled for high winds or rain.

This self-stamping passport is a fun way to keep track of the great activities you participate in!
