Water Quality

Learn about water quality of the Portage River by finding and identifying macro-invertebrates from the water. You must be prepared to go into knee deep water with close-toed shoes. No experience needed. Must be 10 years of age and up to participate. Minors need an adult present. Participants must be able to walk on uneven terrain. Event is dependent on water levels.

Teen participants will assist with a stewardship project and learn about our iNaturalist program at Wood County Parks. Bring your phone to take photos and add them to our WC Parks or iNaturalist apps. Enjoy snacks and conversation after our return to the nature center. This is a drop-off program; you are encouraged to leave your teen with us and return for pickup.
 
 
Scenic River Canoeing

Enjoy a scenic paddle on the Maumee River around the Audubon Islands State Nature Preserve with naturalists and ODNR stream scientists, who will point out interesting river features. Experience how experts evaluate the health of the river by investigating the critters that call it home. Previous canoeing experience highly recommended. Must be 6 years old to ride in middle, 10 years old to paddle at the bow (front), 14 years old to paddle without an adult in the same boat (must have liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). Please make arrangements with program leader for center riders or special needs.

Paddle the Pond

No Registration Required. Enjoy a float on the pond at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve; perfect for a family outing, comfort-builder for beginners, or relaxing exercise! An instructor will be available for introductory safety and skills education. All boats, life-jackets, and paddles provided. Boats and gear on a first-come-first-served basis. Enjoy a nature walk while you wait! The last Monday of every month will feature kayaks along with canoes: June 24, July 29, August 26. Must be 4 years of age or older to ride, 12 years old for kayaks. Call ahead for special needs accommodations. Kayaking programs made possible with ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Coastal Kayaking: Skills, Rescues, Safety

Three Meadows Pond: 700 Three Meadows Drive, Perrysburg
 
Join American Canoe Association instructors to advance your kayak safety and rescue skills in an open water/coastal environment. Kayakers with novice to intermediate ability are encouraged to participate in this three-session class. June 27 & 28 (6-9 pm) June 30 (8 am-2 pm) The first two classes include basic stroke instruction, practice, and rescues on inland waters at Three Meadows Pond in Perrysburg. The third class will take place on open water in the Woodtick Peninsula area of Maumee Bay where students can practice in a coastal/open water environment. Must be 18 years of age or older. This course will include water submersion and basic rescue techniques. All kayaks and gear provided; personal equipment welcome, check with leader beforehand. Dress for the weather and for frequent swimming. Student must be comfortable and confident in their kayak paddling ability, with thorough experience and/or have successfully completed a previous kayak paddling skills course and meet Essential Eligibility Criteria (abilities and characteristics deemed fundamental for participation).
