Wood County Park District Programs

Here are the current offerings from the Wood County Park District. Make the most of these opportunities before we say goodbye to Summer:

 

Water Quality

 
Thursday, August 8; 6:00- 8:00pm
Otsego Park
20000 W. River Rd., Bowling Green
 
Learn about water quality of the Maumee River by finding and identifying macroinvertebrates from the water. Be prepared to go into knee-deep water with close-toed shoes. No experience needed. Must be 10 years of age and up to participate. Minors need an adult present. Participants must be able to walk on uneven terrain. Event is dependent on water levels.
 
 
 

EcoLit Book Group Meeting

 
Thursday, August 8; 7:00- 9:30pm

For this meeting, please read Islands, The Universe, Home by Gretel Ehrlich. Group meets once a month. Register for any or all. Discussion leader: Cheryl Lachowski, Senior Lecturer, BGSU English Dept. and Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN).
 
 
 

Scenic River Canoeing

 
Friday, August 9; 6:00- 8:00pm
Orleans Boat Launch
E. Harrison Ave, Perrysburg
 
Enjoy a scenic paddle on the Maumee River around the Audubon Islands State Nature Preserve with naturalists and ODNR stream scientists who will point out interesting river features. Experience how experts evaluate the health of the river by investigating the critters that call it home. Previous canoeing experience highly recommended. Must be 6 years old to ride in middle, 10 years old to paddle at the bow (front), 14 years old to paddle without an adult in the same boat (must have liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). Please make arrangements with program leader for center riders or special needs.

Self-Care Saturdays

Forest therapy is practicing the connection with yourself and the Earth. By practicing this connection, you reduce stress, depression, anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate, symptoms of OCD and ADHD and increase your sense of well-being, immunity, mental clarity, creativity & concentration. Stargazing with Toledo Astronomical Association

Clothing Swap

Bring any clothes you’re no longer in love with, and find a new-to-you wardrobe from items brought by others. There will be no charging for clothes, and any unwanted clothes left behind will be used in future Ruggers meetings or donated to charity.

The Perseid Meteor Shower

 
Monday, August 12; 9:30- 11:00pm
Carter Historic Farm

Named after Perseus, the Greek mythological hero, this meteor shower is known for its fireballs. This shower is usually the best show of the year, but the nearly full moon will wash out the fainter meteors. Bring a thick blanket or reclining folding chair and appropriate clothing for an evening under the stars. Cancelled if skies are cloudy.
 
 
 
 

Family Adventures in the Wild

W.W. Knight Nature Preserve

Hear the story of two families and how they connected to natural resources with assistance from the parks. In July, the Tittl family will present photos and stories from a wilderness adventure to the Boundary Waters and talk about what they learned at WCPD’s Paddle the Pond program and how it gave them the final nudge to embark on their adventure. In August, Sarah and Mike Krafty will share the highlights of their quest to visit each of our 20 Wood County Parks and speak about their experience with the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program.
 
 
 

Full Moon Walk

Enjoy a gentle stroll under the Full Sturgeon moon as we learn moon lore and look and listen for nocturnal wildlife. Bug spray, repellent technology or clothing recommended, any flashlights must have red lenses, no dogs permitted.
 
 
 
 

Island Tour Kayaking

 
Saturday, August 17; 8:00- 11:00am
Weirs Rapids Access
21095 Range Line Road, Bowling Green
 
Paddle through the largest island chain in the Mighty Maumee with a naturalist as you check out ecological features, learn about the history of the islands, and search for wildlife like bald eagles, painted turtles, beaver and more! A kayaking safety and skills session will precede the trip. Previous kayaking experience highly recommended. Paddling trip is roughly 5 river miles. Must be 14 years of age or older (must have liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). All registered participants must meet Essential Eligibility Criteria (abilities and characteristics deemed fundamental for participation). Call ahead for special needs and accommodations. No restroom facilities at program location. Kayaking programs made possible by ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Melon-Peach Conserve Making

Make and can melon-peach conserve, if all goes/grows well using melons from our garden.
