Wood County Parks List Programs for the Beginning of August

Visit us at the
Wood County Fair
August 1 – 8; 12 noon – 7:30 pm daily
Visit our booth and see all the new and exciting things happening at the Park District. We will have popcorn and the shooting gallery from 3 – 7:30 pm and interactive displays continually. Follow the painted feet on the pavement to our area in The Grove (north of the grandstands).

Learn meditation through motion in this graceful form of exercise that is great for stress reduction. Tai chi promotes serenity through gentle and flowing movements.

Paddle the Pond
Mondays, August 8, 15, 22, & 29;
4:30 – 8:00 pm
Get out on the water for a great family outing, confidence-builder for beginners, or relaxing exercise. An instructor provides an introductory safety and skills session. Watercraft, life-jackets, and paddles are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Enjoy a nature walk while you wait. The last launch is at 7:30 pm.

Youth Intro to Rope Rappelling
Wednesday, August 10; 9:00 am – 1:30 pm
This one’s just for kids! Join us for a day of rope rappelling fun. A brief orientation session will cover the gear and safety procedures, then it’s off to our 25-35 ft. cliffs. All safety equipment, instruction/guiding, and water will be provided, please bring a sack lunch and snacks. Participants must be 8-14 years of age. Parents must be in attendance – no drop-offs. Closed-toed footwear only, access to the cliff tops requires short hikes on slightly uneven terrain.

Food Preservation Series: Sauerkraut
Thursday, August 11; 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Learn about sauerkraut’s history, its connection to northwest Ohio, and its health benefits. Then, we’ll prepare a batch for fermentation before canning another batch that has already fermented. Participants will leave with a canned jar of sauerkraut as well as a batch to ferment at home.
No experience necessary.

A scenic float on the Maumee River with naturalists and stream scientists who will point out interesting river features. Experience how experts evaluate the health of the river by investigating the critters that call it home. Previous kayaking experience highly recommended. Must be 14 years of age or older (must have parental consent and liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). Please make arrangements with program leader for special needs. Kayaking programs made possible with ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Farm Chores: Farm Lumbering

Many 1930s farmers did their own lumbering for building projects. We’ll get familiar with lumbering tools then use them to assemble basic, rough-cut wooden benches and tables for the farm’s woodlot. After, relax and admire our finished work with a snack at our new tables and benches.

Introduction to Kayaking
Saturday, August 27; 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Build your kayaking safety and paddling skills with an American Canoeing Association instructor. On the water and in the classroom, this beginner-friendly course prepares you for your next kayaking adventure. All kayak gear provided. Dress for swimming and the weather. Must be 14 years of age or older (must have parental consent and liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). This course will include water submersion and basic rescue techniques. Please make arrangements with program leader for special needs. Kayaking programs made possible with ODNR Division of Watercraft. This program has an early registration deadline for safety and logistical assurance purposes.

Sawyer Quarry Nature Preserve Opening & Ribbon Cutting
Saturday, August 27; 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Celebrate Sawyer Quarry’s opening to the public with naturalist-led hikes, quarry explorations, refreshments, and news on upcoming programs and improvements. The ribbon cutting is at 3:00 pm. Parking is available at the Perrysburg Township Hall located at 26609 Lime City Road, Perrysburg. There will be a free shuttle to transport people from the parking area to the Nature Preserve.
